I am lucky enough to have a friend who has just completed her training in the Alexander Technique and needs someone to practise on. Twice a week I lie on a table while she very gently realigns my joints and relaxes my body before practising standing, sitting and walking. The idea is for my body to unlearn old bad habits and for me to develop new good ones. The old ones are linked to my body's response to the childhood trauma and form part of my protection mechanism.
The technique was developed to help deal with physical problems, but physical problems are often the result of emotional ones and so the two go hand in hand.
There is masses of information about the Alexander Technique on the internet. It has helped me enormously, on bad days just having someone gently touching me in a totally unthreatening way (it is all fully clothed) makes a massive difference. Learning to accept non-sexual, therapeutic touch has been one of its side benefits.
